Abstract
Contemporary understandings of health are largely shaped by biomedical and psychological paradigms, which define health as a combination of physical, mental, social, and spiritual well-being. Nevertheless, these approaches remain grounded in modern anthropology and treat spirituality as merely one dimension of health. Drawing upon Mullā Ṣadrā’s Transcendent Theosophy, this study offers an ontological reconstruction of the relationship between health and spirituality. Using an analytical and interpretive method based on Ṣadrian texts and contemporary scholarship, it examines whether health can be understood not as a biological or psychological condition, but as a mode of human existence oriented toward perfection and proximity to God. The findings indicate that, according to principles such as the primacy of existence, the gradation of being, substantial motion, and the soul’s corporeal origination and spiritual subsistence, health is an existential process of intensification through which the soul ascends from material to intellectual and divine levels of being. Conversely, illness signifies a form of existential deficiency and alienation from ultimate reality. The study therefore proposes the concept of “health spirituality” rather than “spiritual health,” arguing that spirituality is not a component of health but its ontological foundation and deepest reality.
