Title :
The Effect of Using blogs on Vocabulary Knowledge of Male vs. Female Iranian EFL Learners: The Case of Idioms
-
Abstract :
The development of technology including the weblogs has provided opportunities to solve the limitations of the traditional ways of teaching and learning. A strong knowledge of idioms will help students to be better speakers and negotiators but a lot of them has a difficulty to learn idioms. A web application was developed for the picture-based e-learning of idioms. The present study aimed to investigate the impact of blogging on vocabulary proficiency of Iranian students. In order to this end, a group of 60 homogeneous Iranian EFL learners were randomly placed in four groups based on their performance on oxford proficiency test (OPT). The participants were placed in two experimental groups, namely web-based (N=15) for male, Web-based (N=15) for female, and two control groups (N=15) for male, (N= 15) for female. The participants of the experimental group received instruction of vocabulary through the blog. Participants of the control group were taught based on the traditional instruction of the vocabulary. In order to collect the data, first a pre-test, then posttest consists of 50 multiple –choice items was given to the participants. In conclusion, the results of the study revealed that using blogs had significant role in vocabulary learning of the students. The results also showed that there was not a substantial difference between male and female students regarding their vocabulary knowledge after using blogs. Based on the current study, suggestions were made on how blog can be effected on students’ collocations. The findings of this study can be beneficial to Iranian EFL students, teachers, language schools, policy makers, and syllabus designers.
